Day 2: Silence is Golden (Living Healthier & Happier )

Have you been to the movies lately and right after the previews a message or commercial appears that says, “Silence is Golden?” Why? Because you can spoil the show for those sitting around you by talking!

I don’t know about you, but my tongue has gotten me in a lot of trouble before! I read a verse recently in Proverbs that says (paraphrasing), “Those who talk too much are likely to offend. But those who have power over their tongues are wise.” There is a good reason why God gave us only one mouth and two ears…to listen more and talk less. How many relationships have been destroyed because we allow our mouth to run wild?

Living healthier and happier includes taming our tongue. Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent (Proverbs 17:28). I’ve gotten better over the years at keep my mouth shut. I am sure that practice has helped to improve my marriage! It can help in any relationship for that matter.

Not only can our tongue be used to be self destructive, but it can be used negatively to hurt and tear others down. If we want to have a healthier and happier life, we need to train our tongue to speak positive and encouraging words to others and about others.

With all the negativity in the news lately, it’s easy to get caught up and just rehearse all the negative stuff. It’s easy to look at our situation and start to grumble and complain to those around us. But if we are going to live a life that produces health and happiness, we have to redirect our tongue to speak positive words even in the midst of such trying circumstances. There are several great books out there specifically on this subject of the tongue.
Today, we are going to practice taming our tongue. If this is an area that has been a struggle for you and have cost you some dear relationships, you can start today by putting to practice the words of Solomon: "Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble." Also, as the theatre's message to us..."Silence is Golden!"

Too true! I seem to remember a verse from the New Testament talking about how the tongue can light a forest ablaze. A very powerful instrument. I think one the reasons we have to be careful so much is that we often don't run our words through our brains first. You know what I mean? Our emotions often get the better of us.

Great post!
