Day 6: Beautifying from Within (Living Healthier & Happier)

We have all heard the saying, "Beauty is only skin deep", assumed to have been coined by a woman, but actually first found in A Wife, a poem written by Sir Thomas Overbury in the early 17th century. In it he writes, "All the carnal beauty of my wife, is but skin deep". His purpose was to encourage young men of that era what characteristics to look for in a potential wife.

A Wife became popular and circulated for about 60 years in several publications. The poem was about a woman whose external beauty was deceiving by her flawed internal characteristics that eventually took her from living in a palace to literally being thrown out, and in the process destroyed not only her life, but those connected with her as well.

I’m reminded of the old saying, "Never judge a book by its cover." You can use the newest cosmetic breakthroughs and sport the latest runway fashion, but if you’re rotten on the inside, it’s only a matter of time before you start smelling externally.

True beauty really comes from within. We've all met people in our lives who focus on externally beauty to never be satisfied with themselves. Beautifying ourselves internally will result in fulfillment from the inside-out.

“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.” ~Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

Another great reminder as we often get too focused on the outside. Love this series..

You know, I NEVER knew that. Excellent post. I've know some 'external' beautiful women who were just plain ugly on the inside. (To the bone!)Beauty does come from within.
